Week 12
The majority of this week was spent painting and adding backgrounds to around half of the animation sequences, in addition to the shading. This actually took less time than I anticipated. That being said it still took a long time overall.
For the backgrounds I used Worcester as inspiration, I went to the city centre and took a bunch of reference photos from which to create under-painting for, I also made sure to make the colour palette of the city far more purple to make the aesthetic that was designed during pre-production. In total I there was 28 different backgrounds painted.
Below are the segments of animation composited with the background. I made sure to also include ambient lighting that would come from powers and lasers, and also make sure to add drop shadows so that the characters were not just floating in the frame, but instead feel like they are in fact part of the environment.
Note that the first half of this part of the run has been flipped, fixing the break in the camera line that it created.
I really feel that the addition of the background adds a lot to the animation and really takes it to the next level. While not all of the backgrounds are perfect, and some of the camera angles may not entirely match up with my animation, they are not that noticeable that they detract from the animation, and I am very happy with the final outcome!
The production workflow that I was going on is mirroring the animation industry, most notably the studios that I research. It was important that the character animation was fluid and correct, as that is the selling point of this animation, especially to my target demographic.
These are the timeline and folder layouts for my scenes now that the backgrounds are added. The ambient lighting and cast shadows use Glow and Multiply layers clipped their appropriate character or background so that the shading does not affect other entities in the frame.
